This renovation is the result of a long collaboration with hotelier André Balazs.
For 15 years we constantly modified this apartment, adapting in real time the space to his evolving lifestyle and experimenting with design solutions and materials that were later applied to his commercial properties.
An open loft, the space has been defined largely by materials; Claro Walnut, wool felt, antique leather, ivory lacquered millwork, glossy black plaster, and linen curtains all work together to define distinct areas within the apartment. The living room and library are designed as a large entertaining space with raised intimate seating areas linked by a continuous platform.
The apartment includes a gym and steam room of Carrara marble which are joined with a two-way mirror—this unites the space while allowing natural light to enter the steam room. Furniture is a combination of custom pieces and antiques sourced at auctions.
